Thursday Thirteen

This week we will focus on our hometown, Toledo, Ohio:

  1. One of the best rock and roll bands in the country during the late 1950s and early 1960s was Johnny and the Hurricanes. All of the members of the original Hurricanes were from the Toledo area. Their leader, Johnny Paris, was from Rossford, Ohio, just across the Maumee River.

  2. Actor, Jamie Farr of M*A*S*H fame, hails from Toledo, having grown up not far from where Riverside Hospital stands.

  3. To resolve the brief but fabled Toledo War, Ohio acquired land settlements that became Toledo and Michigan acquired the Upper Peninsula.

  4. Tony Packo's hot dog sauce has been in outer space aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1997.

  5. Some of Toledo's nicknames over the years have included "The Glass City", "Frogtown", and "A Renaissance City".

  6. The R&B smash-hit artist, Anita Baker, was born in Toledo, OH.

  7. The Toledo area became part of the Northwest Territory in 1787.

  8. Toledo Inventor, Michael Owens developed the world's first automated bottle-blowing machine, revolutionizing the bottle industry.

  9. The Toledo Zoo, consistently rated as one of the nation's ten best, was the first zoo to feature a hippoquarium-style exhibit. *Note: Momma was a volunteer at the Toledo Zoo*

  10. In honor of the "sister city" relationship between Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Spain, the Toledo Zoo incorporated Spanish architecture into their building design throughout the zoo.

  11. The Toledo Zoo was started in 1900 with the donation of a woodchuck to the City of Toledo.

  12. Toledo native Jason Cameron was the one of the carpenters on the hit TLC show, "While You Were Out", and is currently the host of "Desperate Landscapes" on the DIY Network. He has also done commercials and appeared in TV shows like "Sex in the City", "Guiding Light" and "All My Children".

  13. Accumulating snowfall in the months of May and October are extremely rare episodes in Toledo. Strangely 1989 saw both! (On May 7th & October 19th). It's the only time Toledo has ever had this occur in the same calender year!

That's some facts about the town we have lived in all our lives (well except momma lived in the outskirts for several years, but that doesn't really count). We hope you learned some stuff and maybe one day you will come visit our city!

That was really interesting. We didn't know anything about Toledo but Mommy does drool over the guy on Desperate Landscapes (she watches when Daddy goes to work on Friday mornings so he doesn't know).

Mmmm, Tony Packos!!!! Mommy and Daddy are glad there is now one outside of the Mud Hens' stadium (convenient after a ball game) and one in Findlay (closer to home - Columbus) Of course, you can't beat the original one.

Mommy lived in Whitehouse as a toddler and her brother was born in Toledo.

Toledo sounds like a fun place to live! My Mommie says she would like to see the Toledo zoo someday.

I have only ever lived in Florida and Virginia. But my Mommie lived in California for a long time.

WOW! Before we even read this post, we thought, Klinger is from Toledo!!! But you told us that!!!! But you used his real name. We don't know him by that name. Our Mom and Dad watch M*A*S*H every night when they lie down to go to bed! We know when we hear the tune, it's bedtime!

Our Momma loves the Toledo Zoo. She spent lots of time there one summer studying the gorillas for a class she was taking. Momma also says she's craving Tony Packos now. :) Our aunt lived in Rossford, too, when she went to Owens Tech a long, long, long time ago. Thanks for sharing all that neat stuff about your city.

It sounds like a really great place to live! We live across the river from Philadelphia but we never get to go into the city. Well, there was that time I had to go to the ER Vet. Thanks for sharing!

Why is Toleedo holy?

Ali & Fiona said...

Dear Skeezix,

Here is the answer to your question:

Wilbur D. "Bill" King (October 6, 1927 - October 18, 2005) was the radio voice of the Oakland Athletics for twenty-five years (1981-2005), the longest tenure of any A's announcer since the team's games were first broadcast in Philadelphia in 1938. Prior to joining the A's, he had been the radio play-by-play announcer for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders football team and the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors basketball team for many years. During his career as an broadcaster, he was known for his catchphrase "Holy Toledo!"

Cool! We didn't realize you lived so close, well, kinda close. We live just north of Cincinnati in Butler County. Mommy & Daddy have been to Toledo for events and stuff and had a very good time.

That is so cool "Hurricane" Duane Thomas visited and was nice enough to leave a message. That is awesome!

Oh no! Tara stole my 'Holy Toledo!' Thanks for the info. Was Jamie Farr Max Klinger? That would make sense, because Klinger said 'Holy Toledo' a lot.
